And what century do we live in?

Please remind me, what year / century are we living in?

– “It’s so fascinating to learn about how people used to live — especially when we discover that not much has really changed.
However, sometimes you come across some old traditions that you simply can’t believe people ever followed — like these odd dating rituals throughout history.

But what women in the 1950s were expected to do for their husbands? Well, those traditions have certainly flown right out the window!
In May of 1955, Housekeeping Monthly published an article entitled, “The Good Wife’s Guide,” detailing all the ways that a wife should act and how best she can be a partner to her husband and a mother to her children.

It may feel a little strange to accept these rules today, but it remains so interesting to see how society once behaved.”

School Holiday Fun!

Fun for your little ones.

Which school holidays here, I often find parents, friends and children wondering what to do.

Weather they are looking for at home fun or fun away on holidays everyone seems to want to do something.

Not just school holiday periods either, I’m often asked for tips on ideas for occupying children of all ages. So here are my top few.

For those wanting to save cash or simply wanting to stay home but still have fun. Yes this can be done!

Go to the library – stay for story time

Bake something, anything a cake, cookies, whatever is in your pantry

Construct something with blocks or Lego’s

Read a book

Paint with water, get old brushes and paint on either the ground or on old newspapers

Draw/Color together

Host a play date with their favorite friend

Dress Up together

Build a go kart

Go swimming (indoor or outdoor, river, beach or pool)

Have a picnic (outside or on the living room floor!)

Listen to new music together

Do karaoke, you can ever use a hair brush as your microphone

Visit a museum

Visit a Zoo

Visit a pet store

Write and mail a letter to someone special

Play a card or board game

Take a walk

Get out baby photos and talk about them

Sing Songs

Take a class together at local art center

Go roller or ice skating together

Tell stories about when your child was a baby

Have letter or color of the week and look for them together – ie green grass

Play “I Spy”

Act out a favorite story together

Play charades

Listen to music and play homemade instruments together – this can be as wild as your imagination will allow. Use old cling wrap tubes for the base of a guitar, an old tissue box for the base of guitar then draw on the strings. Don’t forget to use cotton tips or cotton balls for the tuning 😉

Start a gratitude journal with your child – they can draw what they are thankful for

Let your child pick out the menu for a meal then get them involved in helping to prepare and cook the meal

Start a collection – stamps, rocks or buttons, what is of interest

Practice/teach something (reading, tying shoes, zipping zipper, sports, rhyming, sorting, telling time)

Draw with chalk on your driveway or footpath – it washes away with either a hose down it bucket of water

Go for a bike ride

Play pretend

Make a collage out of photos and/or clippings of their favorite things

Tell jokes

Spend time simply LISTENING to them.

Make a list of things you want to do together in the future!

Easy peasy play doh!

No Cook Play Dough

2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon cooking oil
½-1 cup cold water
2 drops food colouring

Method

Combine plain flour and salt
Add water and oil.
Mix until ingredients are combined.
Knead well.
If consistency is too wet add a little plain flour.
If too dry add dribbles of water until you gain the desired consistency.

Divide the play dough into 4 large balls and make each ball a different colour using the food colour. Remember adding more colour will deepen the colour of your dough.
This is a quick and easy recipe that kids can help make as well as play with.

This can be stored wrapped in cling wrap or in an air tight container.

Play dough can dry very easily and quickly so if it does simply throw away and make some more 🙂

If you like you can also use cookie cutters and make shapes to use as trinkets or decorations.

Just remember if these are hanging decorations to add a hole at the top prior to baking so that a string or ribbon can be tied through once cooled.

To make dried decorations place your dough cut in shapes on a baking try and place in a hot oven approx 200 degrees for 20 minutes.

Easy sausage pasta bake!

Easy sausage pasta bake!

Like many of my other recipes, this one is easy with minimal ingredients!

Many if my friends are like me ‘time poor’ so this is quick, easy and one the whole family ‘generally’ like.

1kg sausages – whatever you like. I generally use beef or Italian. Chorizo is also a favourite 🙂
500gm pasta – again whatever you like spiral is my favourite
1 x cup grated cheese
1 x 495gm jar pasta bake – I generally use a tomato base one – if you like to make your own, use that. 🙂
1 x teaspoon ground chili (optional)

Cook the pasta – I use a teaspoon of oil in the boiling water as this will stop the pasta sticking to each other and the saucepan.

Brown the sausages then chop into pieces – I usually chop into pieces approx 2cm long

Preheat an oven to 180 degrees

Get a large oven proof baking dish and lightly spray with a non stick oil.

Put pasta, sausages and chili in dish and mix well.

Add the sauce and stir.

Evenly spread the grated cheese on top and bake on 150 degrees for approx 30 – 40 mins or until the cheese is golden.

Yummy!

Easy chicken tenders.

Easy chicken tenders / nuggets!

This recipe was given to me by my wonderful sister!

It’s quick, easy and list importantly yummy!

6 x chicken thigh fillets skin off
3 x eggs
2 x cups wholemeal breadcrumbs

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees.
Line a oven tray with either oven proof paper or use a light spray of cooking oil.

Cut the thigh fillets into either strips or pieces – depending on if you would like nuggets or tenders.

Whisk the eggs in a separate bowl.

Place individual pieces of the chicken into the egg until coated.

Then put individual checked pieces I the bread crumb mix and coat generously.

Lay the coated chicken on the tray evenly separated then place into the oven for approx 20 minutes.

 

Warm Quinoa Salad

Warm Quinoa Salad with Edamame & Tarragon

This recipe is one that a good friend if mine passed onto me. She like to eat good wholesome foods that also taste great, not only is this quick and easy, it really does taste great!

INGREDIENTS
1 cup quinoa,
2 cups vegetable broth
2 cups frozen shelled edamame, thawed
1 tablespoon freshly grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh tarragon or 2 teaspoons dried
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup drained and diced jarred roasted red peppers
1/4 cup chopped walnuts, preferably toasted

DIRECTIONS
1. Toast quinoa in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring often, until it becomes aromatic and begins to crackle, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a fine sieve and rinse thoroughly.

2. Meanwhile, bring broth to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Add the quinoa and return to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to a simmer and cook gently for 8 minutes. Remove the lid and, without disturbing the quinoa, add edamame. Cover and continue to cook until the edamame and quinoa are tender, 7 to 8 minutes longer. Drain any remaining water, if necessary.

3. Whisk lemon zest and juice, oil, tarragon and salt in a large bowl. Add peppers and the quinoa mixture. Toss to combine. Divide among 4 plates and top with walnuts.

Tips:
Note: Quinoa is a delicately flavored grain that was a staple in the ancient Incas’ diet. It is available in most natural-foods stores and the natural-foods sections of many supermarkets. Toasting the grain before cooking enhances its flavor and rinsing removes any residue of saponin, quinoa’s natural, bitter protective covering.

Cooking Tip: To toast walnuts:
Cook in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant, 2 to 4 minutes.

MAKE AHEAD TIP: Prepare through Step 3. Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Easy peasy healthy meatballs.

Easy healthy meatballs!

500gm lean mince
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon garlic
1 teaspoon chili powder
2 eggs

Put the mince in a large mixing bowl. Add both raw eggs and combine well
Add the tomato paste and continue to combine then add garlic and chili until all ingredients are well combined.

Take a large spoon of mixture and roll into a ball like shape – you can actually make any shape you like – sausage etc.

Once all meatballs are formed heat a frypan on medium and cook until each side is golden brown.

Serve with diced tomato and avocado for a easy salsa.

Or use as patties for burgers!

This easy meatball recipe can also be altered using turkey mince or pork mince.

Guarantee all the family will love them and by making them smaller ie the size of a golf ball – your toddler can easily munch away on them!

Either way – Delicious!

Tips to keep the spark!

So hubby and I have been together 8 years, this seems more like 88 years but they have been wonderful years. I am often asked how we keep things romantic. Well here are some of my tips! It’s not hard to keep things lively and I promise your partner will appreciate it!

1. Baths together – I know this can be hard especially with little ones looming. I promise you though – providing you have a bath and one that you both fit in. Laying in a warm bath relaxing together will def ignite some passion. My hubby is visual and u believe most men are. Even if you are not in the best shape, guys are not as critical as women. He may not even notice your bumps. Guaranteed your partner will find if anything your confidence sexy.

2. Spontaneous flowers – my hubby buys me flowers almost weekly, they are great in our home and add a sense of ‘pretty’ to the kitchen bench, he always has done this since we met – 8 years ago. I think it’s special to get flowers ‘just because’. Not a huge expensive bunch. Most of the time mine are the cheap servo or corner store ones, but it’s special and the thought that counts!

3. Sexy underwear – I know it’s easy to wear what’s comfy but I know my hubby doesn’t love granny pants! I find full bum underwear ESP to sleep in so I’ve opted to wear boy leg bonds. Yes the girls underwear but it’s sport and sexy and comfy!

4. Cheeky photos via text – not naked but perhaps a bra shot? Something to make him think of you.

5. Look after yourself – I know as well as most that if you have been up all night to a crying baby and feel like a Martian you may not want to get out of your pyjamas all day! However if your partner has been at work all day I guarantee he will appreciate you getting out of your track pants and sloppy joe. Pull your hair back off your face as he will want to see your glowing face and spray some deodorant on – or his fav perfume. Think how you would like to come home to him messy on the couch?

6. Take the time to compliment ea other daily – and mean it. – this could be as small as telling them they smell nice. It’s proven that a single compliment will enlighten anyone’s day!

7. Do something that your partner loves – you may hate the fact that he loves footy and you are summoned to Saturday nights of him on the couch watching tv for endless hours. Perhaps try joining him?

8. Cook your favorite meal – think back to the first place you ate out on a date. Try to re create this meal. Then send him a text / email with the invite to your dining room / kitchen where ever you eat and include the nights menu. They may also need a hint of ‘recreating first date meal’ not all men have fabulous memories.

9. Date night – this may not necessarily mean going out as not everyone can afford to go out to eat nor can everyone access a reliable babysitter (for those of us with little ones) put the kids to bed early get dressed nicely and sit and talk to each other about your weeks/ days. Taking time to talk is important. Turn all electronic devices off including the tv and your phones! Make the night about you two. Try do it at least monthly if you can’t do weekly. This will bring you closer together and help you to stay informed about what you each are getting up to. Don’t talk about nappy changes or little nosey posey down the road.

10. Last but not least – don’t change who you are. A lot of people fall in love get married start a family and then one is bling the other saying ‘your not the person I fell in love with’. I’ve had a few friends make this claim, that their partner has ‘changed’ personalities…. I think it’s important to stay true to who you are. Don’t try to be something g that your not. Your partner fell in love with you for a reason. We all grow as people but be true to yourself.
