What’s your style?

As a qualified interior designer, I would have to agree on most parts of this blog.

Not to say that if you don’t have these, you are not stylish. Everyone has style in their own way, and much like art, I believe style is personal. Your home is your abode and reflects you and your personality and lifestyle.

I’m a bit of a monochrome lover at the moment. Also ‘industrial / Scandi / minimal’. Actually I don’t know that I stick to one specific style? My taste is blended pending on the room.

Chemicals in Toothpaste.

I found this article very interesting.

Im not ‘herbal’ or only into natural things however I am concience of what I do put into my body and into my family.

This has been an interesting read and I will be sure to check the toothpaste bottom colour prior to my next purchase.

School Holiday Fun!

Fun for your little ones.

Which school holidays here, I often find parents, friends and children wondering what to do.

Weather they are looking for at home fun or fun away on holidays everyone seems to want to do something.

Not just school holiday periods either, I’m often asked for tips on ideas for occupying children of all ages. So here are my top few.

For those wanting to save cash or simply wanting to stay home but still have fun. Yes this can be done!

Go to the library – stay for story time

Bake something, anything a cake, cookies, whatever is in your pantry

Construct something with blocks or Lego’s

Read a book

Paint with water, get old brushes and paint on either the ground or on old newspapers

Draw/Color together

Host a play date with their favorite friend

Dress Up together

Build a go kart

Go swimming (indoor or outdoor, river, beach or pool)

Have a picnic (outside or on the living room floor!)

Do karaoke, you can ever use a hair brush as your microphone

Listen to music and play homemade instruments together – this can be as wild as your imagination will allow. Use old cling wrap tubes for the base of a guitar, an old tissue box for the base of guitar then draw on the strings. Don’t forget to use cotton tips or cotton balls for the tuning 😉

Start a gratitude journal with your child – they can draw what they are thankful for

Let your child pick out the menu for a meal then get them involved in helping to prepare and cook the meal

Start a collection – stamps, rocks or buttons, what is of interest

Practice/teach something (reading, tying shoes, zipping zipper, sports, rhyming, sorting, telling time)

Draw with chalk on your driveway or footpath – it washes away with either a hose down it bucket of water

Go for a bike ride

Play pretend

Make a collage out of photos and/or clippings of their favorite things

Tell jokes

Spend time simply LISTENING to them.

Make a list of things you want to do together in the future!

Bath paint?

Bath time fun!

Well my little one loves bath time. Weather he is taking a ‘big boy’ shower or having a soak in the tub, he doesn’t mind.

He has one thousand things in the bath with him which range from toothbrushes, to funnels, to Tupperware, anything he can really find that takes his fancy really, and who am I to stop him exploring and being creative?

So to enhance his creativity just a little more I’ve made bath time just that little be extra special by making bath paint!

Yep you heard it – painting in the bath!

With special paint of course, which doesn’t stain the bath and us easily washed away. How I hear you ask?

With shaving foam!

It needs to be the thick foam almost gel like but don’t waste money on expensive stuff, it all works the same except the more bubbly it is the quicker it dissolves.

So get a silicone ice cube tray.

Fill each hole with the shave foam.

Add different drops of food colour to each hole.

And there you have it!

A miniature paint pallet for bath time fun!

Ps – you can use your fingers to paint or an old tooth brush, or perhaps a real paintbrush, you can pick small cheap paint brushes up at the cheaper variety stores or even the local super market of hardware.

Easy peasy play doh!

No Cook Play Dough

2 cups plain flour
1 cup salt
1 tablespoon cooking oil
½-1 cup cold water
2 drops food colouring

Method

Combine plain flour and salt
Add water and oil.
Mix until ingredients are combined.
Knead well.
If consistency is too wet add a little plain flour.
If too dry add dribbles of water until you gain the desired consistency.

Divide the play dough into 4 large balls and make each ball a different colour using the food colour. Remember adding more colour will deepen the colour of your dough.
This is a quick and easy recipe that kids can help make as well as play with.

This can be stored wrapped in cling wrap or in an air tight container.

Play dough can dry very easily and quickly so if it does simply throw away and make some more 🙂

If you like you can also use cookie cutters and make shapes to use as trinkets or decorations.

Just remember if these are hanging decorations to add a hole at the top prior to baking so that a string or ribbon can be tied through once cooled.

To make dried decorations place your dough cut in shapes on a baking try and place in a hot oven approx 200 degrees for 20 minutes.

Mummy guilt.

Mummy guilt…

Let’s face it, being a mummy doesn’t come with a manual or handbook and nothing can prepare you for the unknown.

When I say unknown I mean, we all know that a baby cries, drinks milk and sleeps right? Yes we lean that from family, friends and pre natal classes. What we don’t lean is what each cry means and why they are constantly waking when they have a clean nappy, have a full tummy and are at perfect temperature.

If like me you have tried control crying, tried the shhh method, patting, night lights, baby monitors, white noise etc etc but sometimes after 2hrs of continuous toddler waking – for no apparent reason other than he calls out my name and thinks I should be sleeping in his room along side him. You snap…

Well last night I did. I had reached my teather of shhh, patting, white noise, coving in blankets and every other method known to mummy’s all over the world. I raised my voice at my 20 month old little man. The love of my life, my world. I told him ‘just go to sleep mummy is cold and tired and I’m over the constant waking’. He didn’t listen though and as soon as I left his room he started to stream and call out ‘mamma, mamma, mamma’. I eventually gave in as I often get ‘mummy guilt’ and feel bad for raising my voice at such an innocent little delight (delight when he isn’t awake at 2am!).

I gave in at 4am after 2 hours of back and forth from his room to my bed and put him in bed with me. He then slept until 8am. I know this is a terrible bad habit but I suffer ‘mummy guilt’ and this morning I feel terrible for many reasons.

1. I raised my voice at him
2. I ended up giving in to him and allowing him to sleep with me
3. I was to tired to get up and see my hubby off to work
4. It’s 8am when I’m usually up at 6:30am
5. His routine is now out by a couple hours all because ‘I gave in’

Does anyone else suffer from ‘mummy guilt’?

I’ve read all the sleep books, saving our sanity books, taming toddler books, healthy eating books but none of these methods seem to help my little one.

Perhaps he just has it over me?

I look at him with overwhelming love and stare into his beautiful brown eyes and feel besotted with love and adoration. Why am I yelling at him to sleep? Perhaps he is just ready to start his day? He did go down at 7pm. That’s 7hrs sleep, adults survive on that, is it enough? Then the little voice of reason kicks in, I hear it telling me – ‘no all the books say toddlers needs 14 hours of sleep’. So I’m confused and feeling ‘mummy guilt’ again.

It’s not only with his sleep I feel guilt, it’s also with his eating. We all want our children to grow up healthy and as my father used to say ‘big and strong’ and we were drummed in that vegetables and meat made us this way. ‘Eat your veg then your meat’ my dad used to say every night at the dinner table and it was a ceremony of us all sitting down to eat together. So I feel guilty that my little one eats alone at 5pm as to keep to his nightly routine of dinner, bath, bottle, story and bed.

I feel guilty about what if he isn’t getting enough nutrients or fruit and vegetables? I still do purée veg for him to endure he eats veg every night and I do them in weekly batches and freeze then in Snap lock bags, mixing up the veg so that it’s not boring and ensuring he eats a variety of different things. I know a few children who are almost teenagers who still don’t eat veg and I think it’s because it wasn’t encouraged as toddlers.

Your taste buds and also habits evolve on a 30 day cycle so you can either beat a habit or learn to enjoy something if you stick to it for 30 days. Now I’m not saying eat the same veg for 30 days straight but encourage healthy eating from a young age and when ten reach 8, 9 or 10 even older they will enjoy certain veg. Don’t get me wrong we don’t have to love all veg but at least like 1 of every colour. He eats meat every night and I ensure he is having enough dairy such as cheese, yogurt, custards, milk etc. I don’t allow too much excess or un necessary sugars and although I allow treats, I try to minimise chocolate, chips, lollies and biscuits to a special occasion.

I’ve listed some veggie and fruit colours below that I try to have at least one veg from each colour in his weekly cook up. I freeze these in 1 cup lots then thaw for the day and cook fresh meat each evening.

Orange / Yellow = pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot, corn, squash, rockmelon, oranges, lemon, mango, pineapple.

Green = broccoli, peas, beans, Brussels sprouts, green capsicum, spinach, asparagus, avocado, green apple, green grapes, limes, kiwi fruit, pear.

Red = tomato, red capsicum, radish, cherries, rhubarb, red grapes, raspberries, strawberries.

Purple / Blue = beetroot, purple asparagus, red cabbage, eggplant, blue berries, mulberries, black berries.

White / Brown = cauliflower, mushroom, onion, peaches, nectarines, garlic, banana, potato, ginger, brown pears, dates.
I know I’m not the perfect mother, I wish I was but what is ‘perfect’? I try my best to raise my child to be the best person he can be. Encouraging him to try new things, be brave, show leadership skills, be kind and caring, fun and happy, help others but most of all I encourage him to be himself. Strive for what he wants rather than what I want him to be.

Perhaps I just have too high of expectations on what is being a good mummy?

Home made piñata!

Home made piñata!

We all want our little ones birthdays to be special and almost every child I know has a party to celebrate every year!

Party’s can become quite expensive and we are not all wealthy. Although sine children think that we are and become expectant of birthday parties.

I am trying to raise my little one not to be expectant. I say trying as he is only 20 months old. I will however not allow a party every year just because he wants one.

I know some readers may say I’m ‘mean’ or ‘that’s nasty’ but seriously, do children need a party every year? What is wrong with having a nice picnic with your family or having 2 friends come over for a play and cupcakes? Why does it need to be extravagant and excessive?

This could be a whole other blog about parents and children who try to ‘out do’ each other with hosting parties. So back to my piñata !

Easy to make and don’t cost a lot, plus lots of fun! Get your little ones involved!

You will need –

2 x old news papers torn into pieces approx 1 inch squared or similar ( the shape doesn’t matter)

A selection of coloured child friendly or non toxic paint.

As many balloons as you wish to make piñata

1 x tub of child friendly / non toxic paper glue. (Something like clag or water based – easier for the piñata to break when being hit)

A leg nth of string to tie the balloon whilst drying.

Firstly blow up the balloons and tie a knot in each end.

Tie some string at least 40cm in length around the knot. This works as a handle as such.

Then paint the entire balloon with the glue making sure not to leave any in painted.

With the newspaper stick each pice over the balloon to cover the entire thing with the newspaper or until you can no longer see and balloon. Making sure that you leave the tied end uncovered. This is where you will fill the piñata with lollies! Or toys, or whatever you fancy!

Repeat the glue and paper process 3 times. Allow the paste to dry over night in a cool well vented space. Perhaps tie the balloons up so that they also cannot be touched.

Once all dry you can carefully pop the balloon with a pin and fill with your desired filling.

Once filled, stand the piñata upside down so that the opening is at the top and carefully cover with a piece of newspaper and glue down again but be careful not to get the glue inside with your goodies.

Using another piece of string to your desired length paste carefully so that this will be what you use to tie up your piñata. You can also use decorative ribbon if you wish.

** My tip if your using lollies, use lollies in wrappers. This also helps if glue get on the but also nice when the piñata breaks and lollies fall to the ground.

Once completely dry you can paint the balloon as you wish. Perhaps making a face or patterned in any design you like. Again allow to dry for a few hours or over night.

Your piñata is ready! Have fun!
